How to keep bread from going stale
The key or the secret is to be able to maintain the optimum degree of moisture in the bread.
There are a number of tricks to keep bread.
There is no doubt that bread is an essential food in most homes. It has always been part of our diet and is one of the main edibles of plant origin. We eat it as a base with other foods, to accompany some dishes or as an ingredient.
For this reason, we need to store the bread properly so that it does not become soft or excessively hard.
Here are some tips for preserving bread :
Choosing the right bread
In most cases, buying the cheapest bread is the most expensive choice . This is so, since the bread that is left over will not be kept in as good condition as a higher quality bread.
We will end up throwing away the bread that has quickly become hard or soft and, therefore, spending more money to buy more bread. You should know that breads made with oil or butter tend to keep fluffy and fresh for longer.
Let the bread cool
If you buy fresh bread and it is still warm, when you get home you should let it cool completely in the air before putting it away. If you don’t do this and store it immediately in a bag, the heat it gives off will over-moisten and soften them.
Serve the bread properly
When you have to serve the bread, it is preferable to cut the slices when eating them. You should know that if you have cut bread left over, it is easier for it to dry out and harden.
The size of the bread does matter
In the format bread loaf, or more popularly called village bread, the crust is thicker and protects the crumb inside for much longer.
The thinner the surface of the crust of the loaves, the faster they will dry. This happens for example in loaves of bread. On the other hand, in loaves, as they have a thicker crust, this does not happen so quickly.
How to store bread so it doesn’t get stale
Forget about plastic bags to keep bread. Rescue the cloth bag that your grandmother used, the one she used to always. It is the best place to store your leftover bread.
Also recommended for storing bread for several days are paper bags or wooden drawers, such as typical bread baskets.
If you opt for the second option, wrap the food in a cloth or cotton cloth.
All these materials have in common that they allow the bread to breathe and to be able to conserve the interior humidity, instead of it passing from the crumb to the crust.
Plastic bags are not recommended at all. They help mold to appear and excessively soften the bread.
Once you have the bread inside the cloth bag, the ideal thing is to keep it in a dry and cool place. At room temperature but away from the sun.
Another trick to preserve the bread and maintain the crisp texture is to put a piece of potato or a little celery in the bag.
By using cloth bags you will also be helping the environment, since you reduce plastic waste to a great extent.
Don’t use the fridge
It is not advisable to use the refrigerator, refrigerator or refrigerator to preserve bread. It is much better to keep it at room temperature, as this appliance absorbs the moisture from the bread.
Attention! In the case of sliced bread, it IS advisable to keep it in the refrigerator in the original plastic wrap, as it helps retain moisture.
How to freeze bread

When defrosting bread, it is better to do it in the air. You should avoid using the microwave. However, if you are in a hurry to defrost it, you can use it, but wrapping the bread with kitchen paper and then let it rest for a couple of minutes.
How to recover stale bread
If in any case, you forgot or have not been able to follow these tips to keep bread fresh as just said. You should know that all is not lost, you can use it in two ways:
- Bake the bread for a few minutes at 60-70ºC, having previously moistened the crust with water.
- Cut it into slices and toast it. You will get rich biscuits.
